Exercising a Siberian Husky
Just how much do they need then?
The Siberian Husky is a natural athlete. They require exercise in
some form - whether that is walking, playing or working in harness.
However, it is a misconception that the Siberian needs lots of open
space. Adequate exercise can be achieved within a small fenced area
or with daily walks. This must be secure with at least a six foot
fence and preferably 2 feet beneath the surface too. If you don't
they are likely to jump over or dig their way out to go off hunting.
30 minutes of hard play every day is sufficient. If you have One
Siberian, you will need to be quick and ready on your feet for play.
If you have two Siberian Huskies, they can entertain each other. But
while it isn’t necessary to have two, it is certainly helpful to
have another dog around that likes to play.
Nothing replaces a good long walk or a run in harness. Although
not necessary every day, to see how much a Sibe enjoys this is very
infectious and you will be longing for those trails each day. Keep
in mind that all Siberians will find a way to amuse themselves
almost anywhere they go. That is why it is always important to find
ways to keep them entertained. With their intelligence coupled with
their power, they can be a handful for the unwitting home.
The happiest Husky is one owned by an active person or family
with a strong sense of responsibility, who will give it plenty of
exercise and has a firm, consistent training routine. It is
recommended for new owners to attend dog training classes with their
puppy and to always exercise the dog on a leash. Siberian Huskies
have a very strong desire to run. no road sense and if let off a
leash, or it escapes, it will just run and run. The only thing that
will stop a husky is a car or a farmers shotgun. |
